The President of the Historical Society of Nigeria, Prof Sam Aghalino FHSN, was in Makurdi as a guest lecturer during the 63rd birthday celebration of the former governor of Benue State, His Excellency Samuel Ortom. He spoke on, ‘Democracy, Insecurity, and the Future of One Nigeria: Reading the Mind of Samuel Ortom’. He made the point that while the Historian is not traditionally endowed with the clairvoyance to read minds, we can interrogate actions, speeches, deeds and dispositions of men and guided by the clitche that ‘out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh’. We underlined the point that the centralisation of the Police system in Nigeria is obsolete and we noted with satisfaction, the new quest for State Police. Our point of departure was that one Nigeria may be guaranteed when Justice, Equity and devolution of powers are pursued with religious zeal.
